There was little doubt that the 37-foot flat pattern was going to make Thursday’s third round of the 2020 U.S. Open a supreme test. Any flat pattern is incredibly difficult, but one that short adds to the challenge by having a distance that logically would be played to the outside, and outside shots with no shape are naturally going to create more splits and other odd leaves due to the more extreme angles than for shots played more toward the middle of the lane.
