When I went out on the PBA Tour in 1987, the first tournament of the year was the U.S. Open and it was the first year of the huge Seagram’s sponsorship. It was the richest — $500,000 prize fund and $100,000 top prize — and greatest tournament in PBA history. And I could not bowl it because I wasn’t an established Tour player and I had failed to win a spot. Back then, those were the only ways to get a spot in the U.S. Open.
