I first became aware of Kamron Doyle when he cashed in a PBA Regional at age 12.
That was an astounding feat that I would not have thought possible, and it became even more amazing to me when I saw a video clip of Kamron and quickly realized that he wasn’t some physically precocious boy who looked much older.
Is cashing in the U.S. Open at barely 14 an even more amazing feat?
Suffice it say that both are amazing, although 14 seems more plausible than 12.
I was a bit of a teen phenom when I went into adult competition just a few days before I turned 16 in the summer of 1978. I cashed in an adult tournament in my first effort and a couple of months later I won a fairly significant two-day tournament against a field that included many of Wisconsin’s top bowlers of the time, including future USBC Hall of Famers Rich Wonders and Darold Meisel.
But I couldn’t have conceived of bowling in a PBA Tour event when I was 15 or 16, much less cashing in a PBA Regional when I was 12!
I was nowhere near Pete Weber, who was bowling against the top pros in pot games when he was about Kamron’s current age and made his first PBA Tour TV finals in early 1980 when he was still 17.
And then there’s Norm Duke, who won his first PBA Tour title at 18.
They might be the closest two comparisons of my lifetime.
Kelly Rakow of Bowling Supply Company posted on my Facebook page Friday that "Kamron's family built a new house this past year, and put 2 lanes in. His dad purchased a Kegel Ion from me that we installed at there home, Kamron can hardly move it around but it enables him to practice on the conditions prior to the events. I've been able to watch him develop over the past few years, he's a feel player that adjusts well at the line and his attitude has continued to improve."
Kamron isn’t going to win the U.S. Open this week. He would need a huge rally in Friday’s 8-game cashers round just to make the top 24 as he stands 54th at 3,640, 109 pins behind 24th.
But the 5-foot-5, 105-pound eighth grader most definitely was the story of the Open on Wednesday as qualifying ended and the 394-bowler field was cut to 98 for the cashers round.
Unless you’ve experienced what it’s like to bowl on a flat oil pattern, especially in a long-format event, you have no idea how grueling it is.
As former PBA Tour exempt player Chris Johnson said on Facebook Wednesday night: “Just had to comment real quick. I don’t know a few of you on my friends list but y’all are way too hard on yourselves for your finish at the U S Open. It is brutal guys. A couple have said people saying they suck on their finish. That is B.S. Those people will NEVER EVER have the drive to enter the tournament. Those people are the ones throwing the rocks from the glass house. My best finish there was 14th and that is one of my Top 5 performances ever. Be proud guys. If y’all shoe up for a tough event which most who Figjam all the time will never do, I have the utmost respect for you taking your shot on the toughest shot no matter how you finish. Congrats.”
That captures the U.S. Open completely.
After 18 games, the average for fourth (four make the stepladder finals on ESPN) is a shade under 218, the average for 24th is a shade over 208, and the average to cash was a little over 196. Only 65 players averaged 200 or better for the 18 games!
And here’s a 14-year-old kid averaging 202 and change.
“People tell me I have a pretty good mental attitude which keeps me in the game,” Doyle said in this PBA news release. “That’s probably why I’m still in the cut. It’s kind of grown with me. I was real bad when I was young. But that’s something people have to learn. If you get mad and frustrated and miss a spare, that costs you 20 pins.”
A lot of very good bowlers don’t figure that out in a lifetime.
Kamron crossed with Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia this week, who made the cut at age 65, edging Kamron by seven pins. (Making the cut at 65 is pretty amazing, too.)
Petraglia’s interesting comments on Doyle — and a lot more from Doyle — are in the PBA release.
Ryan Shafer led the qualifying at 4,030, 10 pins ahead of P.J. Sonday and 107 ahead of Mike Fagan.
The leaders will be the story the rest of the way, but on Wednesday the spotlight belonged to a kid who doesn’t bowl like one.
(Here's a feature on YouTube on Kamron when he was 11, courtesy of USBC's Neil Stremmel. And here is a video posted on the PBA message boards of Kamron at a tournament in 2011.)
