Anita Manns of Houston started her first round of qualifying at the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Queens on Friday with an 802 series and finished with 1,235 for five games to top a star-studded leaderboard, USBC reported.

Manns rolled games of 270, 268, 264, 215 and 218 for a 247 average and an 18-pin lead over Diandra Asbaty at AMF Euless Lanes in Euless, Texas.

"I was just trying to stay focused on making good shots, one at time," Manns said in this USBC news release. "Every frame is its own game, so make a good shot, and if you leave something, you spare it up and move on to the next frame."

Stefanie Nation was in third at 1,196, Kelly Kulick fourth at 1,148, Clara Guerrero fifth at 1,140, and defending champion Miss Parkin sixth at 1,133, including a 298 game

The Queens continues Saturday with a second 5-game qualifying round, with the 131-player field then cut to the top 64 for another 5-game round on Sunday.

The top 47 then advance to join Parkin in the double-elimination match-play bracket, which begins at 12:30 p.m. Central time on Sunday. Ultimately, the final five players will advance to the televised stepladder finals live on ESPN on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

USBC said the Queens match play format has changed this year, with only 48 players advancing, and the top 16 players receiving a first-round bye. The final two players in the winners bracket will be assured a spot in the TV finals, with the other three spots coming from the contenders (losers) bracket.

BowlTV will have live webcast coverage of match play rounds.
