Applications are due June 15 for the Billy Welu Scholarship, PBA announced.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a male or female college student who competes in the sport of bowling and "exhibits exemplary qualities as a student and citizen," PBA said in this news release.

To be eligible, candidates must be amateur bowlers currently in college (before the application deadline) with at least a 2.5/4.0 GPA or equivalent.

To access the Welu Scholarship application form, go to pba.com and click on the Welu Scholarship link under the "Resources" tab.

Welu was a PBA charter member who was inducted into both the PBA and United States Bowling Congress Halls of Fame in 1975. Welu's wins included three majors, but he was best known as the color analyst working with Chris Schenkel on PBA telecasts on ABC-TV before he died of a heart attack in 1974 at age 41.
