Marc McDowell had a “pretty solid” start in his first national PBA tournament in more than 15 years as lefty Mike Dias took the lead after Monday’s opening round in an atypically high scoring PBA Senior U.S. Open in Las Vegas.
Dias, who has one PBA Senior Tour title, totaled 1,488 (248 average) on games of 214, 300, 237, 212, 257 and 268 for a 4-pin lead over Sammy Ventura, PBA reported.
Three Las Vegas area bowlers followed: non-PBA member Terry Leong at 1,470, former touring pro Joe Salvemini at 1,465 and non-PBA member Dick Baker at 1,452.
“You wouldn’t know it by the way I’ve bowled in past U.S. Opens but I actually like these longer-format tournaments,” Dias, whose best Senior U.S. Open finish was 43rd in 2007, said in this PBA news release. “I’m trying to treat it like any other tournament to avoid putting too much pressure on myself. It’s just one block and there’s a long way to go but even after six games I’ve got a good picture of how the house is playing and just need to get all the pins I can.”
McDowell totaled 1,338 for 41st competing on C squad, which he said was the lowest scoring of the day as the lanes were oiled once in the morning and left for the rest of the day.
The long-retired PBA Tour star and 1992 BWAA Bowler of the Year will rotate to the second squad Tuesday and the first Squad Wednesday as the 220-player field bowl 18 games of qualifying. The top 55 then advance to a 9-game cashers round on Thursday. The top 24 then advance to 24 games of round robin match play Thursday and Friday before the top four compete in a stepladder finals about 5:30 p.m. Central time on Friday.
The competition is being webcast live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online channel.
“I’m right ahead of Ron Mohr and Walter Ray (Williams Jr.) so I guess I’m in pretty good company,” the Monona native and Madison Bowling Association Hall of Famer said, adding the quip that he is was the seventh high “amateur.”
Mohr, the reigning Senior Player of the Year, and Williams, the living legend, are tied for 42nd.
“I feel pretty solid,” McDowell said. “C squad probably is the lowest scoring squad and I feel pretty good with how I managed the lanes and my equipment. It was challenging. I made good moves moving deeper: I slowed down and let it arc.”
McDowell said his games ranged from a 238 start to a 201 finish with no big numbers.
“I was steady but I just couldn’t punch out any games,” he said.
The Ebonite staffer used a Mission X out of the gate, switched to a Mission 250K for games two through four, then finished with an Elevate.
“I had a good time and enjoyed it,” McDowell said, adding that he had a chance to have a beverage and catch up with old friends Brian Voss and Mike Edwards after he finished, which is part of what the Senior Tour is about.
Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha leads the Wisconsin contingent at eighth with 1,411. Dale Traber of Cedarburg is 49th at 1,325, Jerry Sikora of Wisconsin Rapids tied for 68th at 1,296, frequent MAST competitor Todd Kjell of Roscoe, Ill., 80th at 1,282, MBA Hall of Famer Joel Carlson of Omaha, Neb., 103rd at 1,256, Dave Schultz of Jackson tied for 140th at 1,210, Jace Peterson of Elkhorn tied for 147th at 1,207, Dennis Bremer of Stoughton 171st at 1,171, and Norb Wetzel of Fond du Lac 177th at 1,160.
Boresch won his Senior Tour debut to start this season and is third in the Senior Player of the Year race, according to this PBA news release.
Williams Jr. leads the Senior Player of the Year points race going into the Senior Open with 20 points, two more than Bob Learn Jr. and four more than Boresch and Johnny Petraglia.
Points in standard events are 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1 for first through fifth, but the points rise to 24, 12, 8, 4 and 2 for the Senior Open and USBC Senior Masters.
