Pete Weber is the only bowler to win five U.S. Open titles, memorably exclaiming “Who do you think you are? I am!” after winning his fifth in February.
Kelly Kulick has two U.S. Women’s Open titles and lost the title match as top seed last year.
But that didn’t lessen her ambitions to catch Weber, as you can see in this United States Bowling Congress video from this year’s U.S. Women’s Open, where Kulick leads heading into the semifinal round after 18 games of qualifying.
So could it one day be, “Who do you think are? She is!”?
I wouldn’t bet against Kulick, as her strength, stamina and powerful game make her ideally suited to the long grind of a U.S. Open.
Kulick averaged 245 during the third round to finish with an 18-game total of 4,294 (238.5 average), 70 pins ahead of Stefanie Nation, USBC reported in this news release.
“Right now my A game is always in play,” Kulick said in the release. “I can play straight when I need to, but as soon as I can get left and throw the ball a little right the lanes open up to me and I feel very comfortable.
“I had a big lead last year, but it didn’t do me any good in the finals. I’m going to bowl each day, one game at a time and keep myself in contention to make the show. My goal is really just to bowl consistently until I get to that position and try to really come into my own out there.”
The top 50 (3,810 or better) out of the 202-player field advanced to bowl another six games on Monday, with the top 16 advancing to round-robin match play starting Monday night. The top five after 40 games compete in the stepladder finals, which will be taped outside in downtown Reno for airing July 3 at 7 p.m. Central time on ESPN2.
Missy Parkin is third at 4,178, Shannon O’Keefe fourth at 4,159 and Lynda Barnes fifth with 4,149.
Roxanne George of Waukesha finished 82nd at 3,680, Jan Schmidt of Hales Corners 96th at 3,641, and Jessica Lesagonicz of Janesville 164th at 3,366.
In the Senior U.S. Women’s Open being held concurrently at the National Bowling Stadium, Lucy Sandelin maintained her lead with an 18-game total of 3,939 as the field was cut to the top 15.
Robin Romeo was second at 3,826 and Jeanne Naccarato third at 3,763.
After six more games on Monday, the top eight advance to round-robin match play before the field is cut to the stepladder finalists.
