The 11th Frame: Walter Ray holds commanding lead in Senior Player of Year race with 2 events left

It should have surprised no one that Walter Ray Williams Jr. had the worst season of his PBA carrer in 2011-12 — he is 52!

It also should surprise no one that Walter Ray is having a stellar season on the PBA Senior Tour — he’s one of bowling’s all time greats and on the Senior Tour he is matched against bowlers who presumably face some of the same physical challenges age offfers everyone!

I will have a front two seat in the next couple of weeks as Walter Ray wraps up what looks like it’s going to be a Senior Player of the Year season in Hammond, Ind. and Decatur, Ill., as I’m now 50 and will be competing in both tournaments.

Williams Jr. is the only player with two titles on the Senior Tour this year and has a 16-point lead over fellow Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli and Mike Edwards heading into the PBA Senior South Shore Open presented by DV8 in Hammond starting Monday, PBA reported in this news release.

The points for Hammond and the PBA Senior Decatur Open presented by Brunswick Aug. 11-14 at Spare Time Lanes in Decatur are 16 for first, 8 for second, 4 for third and 2 for fourth.

“Bowling on the regular tour the last two years has been very frustrating for me,” Williams said in the PBA release. “But bowling with the Seniors this season has definitely given me back a little bit of confidence. I’m planning on bowling as many (PBA) Tour events as I can this upcoming season. In fact, I just won a paid entry into the World Series of Bowling at a recent regional tournament.”

More details on Williams’ season are in the release.

The Senior Decatur Open will be covered live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online channel.
