I am pretty certain those are urethane balls being thrown on a far outside line on the 34-foot Stockholm pattern Monday at Sunset Station in suburban Las Vegas — I simply can’t conceive of any resin ball that dull having that reaction on a 34-foot pattern.
It’s fun to watch and would have been a riot to bowl!
Team USA’s John Janawicz bowled the most notable game of the day, closing with a 278 game for a 1,449 6-game total to take the men’s gold medal, USBC reported in this news release.
Mexico’s Andre Fors, who finished with a 299 game, finished seven pins back for the silver, while Brazil’s Marcelo Suartz, who led going into the final game, earned the bronze with 1,428 after closing with 181, USBC reported.
Fors is a freshman at Lindenwood University in suburban St. Louis.
“I knew I needed a big game and had to do something different, so I moved in a little bit and changed my grip pressure,” Janawicz, who also won the PABCON men’s singles title in 2007, said in the USBC release. “After two frames, I knew the ball was doing the right thing and at that point it was just about getting it there.”
Venezuela’s Alicia Marcano, who also won the PABCON women’s singles gold in 1997, earned the women’s singles gold medal with 1,368, while Team USA’s Shannon Pluhowsky finished 15 pins back for the silver and Colombia’s Paola Gomez took the bronze with 1,340, USBC reported.
Other Team USA men’s finishes were Marshall Kent fifth, Tommy Jones sixth, Bill O’Neill seventh, Steve Smith eighth, and Patrick Allen 13th.
Other Team USA women’s finishes were Liz Johnson fifth, Josie Earnest seventh. Stefanie Nation 11th, Diandra Asbaty 13th, and Leanne Hulsenberg 42nd.
