It’s not often I see a tournament format I haven’t seen before, but the new Even Steven Tournament got me — and in a good way.
The tournament at AMF Bowlero in Wauwatosa on Nov. 25 at 10 a.m. will feature a dozen 3-person right-handed teams and a dozen 3-person left-handed teams (if the field fills — and getting enough lefties almost certainly will be the biggest issue).
The lefty teams will bowl on the even lanes and the righty teams on the odd lanes for four games of qualifying, ensuring (in theory) that everyone deals with the same amount of pattern transition.
The top three lefty and top three righty teams then will advance to round robin match play consisting of 2-game Baker format matches. The top lefty and righty team by match record — ties broken by total pins — then advance to a 4-game Baker match with total pins determining the champion.
The entry fee is $120 per team, with no lineage or expense fee.
Based on 24 teams, first will be $1,000, second $500, third $425, fourth $350, fifth $325 and sixth $280.
The top lefty and righty individuals during qualifying each will win a bowling ball donated by Cliff Barnes Platinum Pro Shop inside Bowlero.

This looks like a fun tournament and with a 100 percent return of prize money I’d be interested. However, I already have plans for that day so I won’t be able to make it.
But I’d be surprised if it doesn’t fill or come close to filling.
