Robert Vater dominated in winning Friday’s 2026 GIBA 11thFrame.com Open sweeper by 92 pins.

Vater totaled 1,248 using a Brunswick COMBAT SOLID for his five games at Cherry Lanes inside the Diamond Jo Casino building in Dubuque, Iowa.

Lucas Hersrud was second with 1,156 after closing with a perfect game, Tyler Close was third at 1,135, Josh Kennedy fourth at 1,133, and Mikey Saxton III fifth with 1,129.

The 57-player field competed on the new 11thFrame.com Open lane pattern designed by USBC lane pattern designer Nick Hoagland and the top 14 cashed.

Jackson Satterlee got the last cash spot at 1,054, three pins ahead of lefty Kevin Magnuson.

The top five paid $500, $400, $300, $250 and $200, and 14^th was $80. The entry fee was $50.

Of the 57 players, 29 averaged 200 or better. Last year, it was 31 of 50, and before that it was 23 of 52, 20 of 52, and 23 of 60.

I was one of those plus as I finished with 1,034 on games of 214, 226, 190, 182 and 222, using a Storm EQUINOX SOLID with 500-grit CTD surface.

I played out around 5-board to start and finished about 10-board, going very direct.

I was aided by crossing with some solid young players with high rev rates who created some dry area for me. They included Hersrud, Darin Bloomquist, Keaton Bieri, and Magnuson (who didn't impact the right side).

I earned Hoagland’s services by making a donation to the Make-A-Wish charity tied to the huge Hoosier Classic college tourney H2M Management runs in Indianapolis. (That was an offer he made to anyone.)

Hoagland delivered a pattern that is similar to lane pattern 4 from the 2026 U.S. Open and the 2015 U.S. Open. It is 46 feet and features 39.39 mL of Brunswick Control oil with main ratios of 1.25-1 on the left side and 1.34-1 on the right side. Almost all of the oil is applied in the first 37 feet. The pattern from 2022-25 was 37 feet with 24.63 mL of oil and pattern ratios by volume of 1.11-1 on the left and 1.66-1 on the right.

In the sweeper, that oil volume gave me plenty of push in and I was able to get it return from the right with my turtle speed.

I expect the pattern to play harder on Saturday with more cleaning and oiling.

In total, the sweeper paid out $2,760, while the 57 entries at $50 totaled $2,850.

In 2024, Lucas Hersrud won the sweeper with 1,194 and the last cash was 1,067.

In 2023, Bloomquist won the sweeper with 1,179 and the last cash was 1,026.

In 2022, Shea Bittenbender won the sweeper with 1,315 and the last cash spot was 1,010.

In 2021, Clayton Mohr won the sweeper with 1,153 and the last cash spot was 978.

In 2020, Andrew Anderson won the sweeper with 1,288 and the last cash spot was 1,037.
