If you ever doubt that bowling can be a cruel sport, just cue up Wes Malott’s title matches in major tournaments.
Malott did win the 2013 U.S. Open, but he’s also finished second in the 2009-10 PBA World Championship (to Tom Smallwood and his “out-of-nowhere” story 244-228), the 2013 USBC Masters (to Jason Belmonte 258-245 when Belmonte outperformed him in the 10th frame), the 2014 Tournament of Champions (to Belmonte 219-218 again in the 10th frame), and in the PBA...
