On Oct. 18, 1968, Bob Beamon stunned the world with a long jump of 29 feet, 2 1/2 inches at the Olympics in Mexico City. When records typically were broken by inches, Beamon shattered the world record, surpassing not just 29 feet for the first time but 28 feet as well — the prior record was 27 feet, 4 3/4 inches.
