Germantown, Amherst win boys/co-ed titles; Kenosha Tremper, Amherst repeat as girls champions; Darin Bloomquist, Caitlin Mertins take singles titles at 2018 Wisconsin High School Bowling State Championships
Germantown and Amherst won the boys/co-ed titles, Kenosha Tremper and Amherst repeated as girls champions, and Darin Bloomquist and Caitlin Mertins took the singles titles at the 2018 Wisconsin High School Bowling State Championships at Dale’s Weston Lanes in Weston over the weekend.

The 2-division team portion featured 48 boys teams and 26 girls teams, down from 50 and 28 a year ago, while the singles portion featured 94 boys and 54 girls, down from 100 and 56 a year ago. The tournament awards thousands in scholarship funding.
The lane patterns were Kegel Abbey Road 3540 for the singles, Kegel Broadway 4537 for the team qualifying, and Kegel Bourbon Street 6240 for the Storm Scholarship Doubles.

In Division 1 boys/co-ed, Germantown knocked off top seed Racine Park 402 (212-190) to 387 (213-174), after edging 2015 and 2016 champion Sun Prairie 379 (199-180) to 375 (178-197). Sun Prairie had defeated Sauk Prairie/Poynette 428-347 after Sauk Prairie/Poynette opened the stepladder with a 357-343 win over Sheboygan South/Oostburg.
Monona Grove, coached by Phil Dowling, finished 16th.
In Division 2 boys/co-ed, top seed Amherst held off Peshtigo 372 (180-192) to 363 (179-184), after Peshtigo had advanced from the first match with wins of 324-300 over defending champion Monroe, 365-311 over Wilmot Union, and 392-345 over Antigo.
In Division 1 girls, Tremper beat Oshkosh West 372 (170-202) to 366 (176-190) for its second straight title. Tremper advanced to the title match with a 420-311 rout of Sun Prairie, which had routed Sussex Hamilton 342-238 after Hamilton bead Janesville Parker 348-293.
In Division 2 girls, Amherst won its second straight title by downing Manawa 389 (220-169) to 308 (148-160). Monona Grove opened the stepladder by edging West Bend East 320-313 before Manawa defeated the Silver Eagles 328-288 and edged Beaver Dam 349-342.
From Madison area District 4, the Sun Prairie boys are coached by John Breunig, the Sauk Prairie/Poynette boys by Jake Harrison, the Sun Prairie girls by Cher Breunig, and the Monona Grove girls by Dave Guenterberg and Mark Allen.
In boys singles, Bloomquist beat Austin Est of Sun Prairie 193-172 for the title. Bloomquist closed with a flush strike, bucket and spare to force Est to strike three times for the win. Est left a ringing 10-pin on his first ball.
Est won the semifinal 192-190 over Zach Thomas of Middleton. Est rolled a strike and then left a ringing 10-pin in the 10th to give Thomas a chance to double for the win, but the left-handed Thomas left a solid 6-pin.
Justin Smith of Tremper opened the stepladder with a 290-222 win over Zach Sasser of Wilmot Union, before the 2-hander fell to Est 238-212.

In girls singles, Mertins ran the stepladder to win the title, beating Kelsey Jaeger of Manawa 230-193, Brittany Schwartz of Oshkosh West 208-174, Haylee Schwark of Beaver Dam 166-154, and Olivia Komorowski of Oshkosh North 199-183.
Mertins locked up the title match with a blower strike in the 10th, after surviving a washout and open in the 10th of the semifinal when Schwark needed a double but left a 6-pin on a Brooklyn on her first shot.
Other District 4 singles finishers were Taylor Knudtson of Monona Grove 26th, Allison Dempski of Marshall 32nd, Caitlin Powers of Marshall 35th, and Cila Freitas of La Follette 40th.
Other District 4 singles finishers were Andrew Olson 10th, Jeromey Hodsdon 21st, Quinn Sheehy 22nd, and Collin Krachey 84th.
The Storm Scholarship Doubles has been held in conjunction with the Wisconsin High School State Bowling Championships since 2005. The tournament drew 151 boys/co-ed and 51 girls entries, with 52 earning scholarship funds based on 4-game scratch Baker totals.
Payne Fakler and Tyler Mouthey of Nathan Hale and Greendale won the boys/co-ed division with 957, earning $200 each in scholarship funds.
For girls, Sun Prairie’s Amber Olson and Taylor Jenson won wth 860, earning $120 each.

The 2017-18 high school season ends on Saturday with the Wisconsin All Star Challenge at Bowl-A-Vard Lanes in Madison.
The District 4 boys team, coached by John Breunig, includes Sheehy, Olson, Krachey, Est and Thomas.
The District 4 girls team, coached by Dave Guenterberg, features Dempski, Knudtson, Freitas, Karis Rogers of LaFollette/McFarland/Memorial, and Jensen.
