The 13th annual Junior Hall of Fame Tournament drew a sold-out field of 84 teams and awarded $13,050 to cross the $100,000 mark in scholarship funds awarded in its history on Sunday at AMF Bowlero, tournament founder and director Shannon Labinski reported.

Since 2007, the Junior Hall of Fame Tournament has awarded more than $102,000 in scholarship prizes to youth bowlers.

Here’s a great video by Labinski on the history of the tournament.

Each team consists of an adult Hall of Fame member or celebrity and two youth bowlers. USBC Hall of Famer and 900 Global staffer Lynda Barnes again came from Texas to take part.

Complete standings can be found at the tournament website and Facebook page.

Labinski offered thanks to sponsors 900 GlobalLogo Infusion, and the Milwaukee Area USBC Bowling Association and Hall of Fame.

Labinski reported that youth bowlers Blake Reiger and Ryan Dreikosen won the event for the third time, and the Adam Schultz High Series Award recipient was the high bowler in the entire house, Collin Krachey, whose 1,018 for four games of qualifying beat all of the adults.

The 14th annual Junior Hall of Fame Tournament already is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020. It's amazing what Labinski and her crew of sponsors and volunteers accomplish, and here's hoping it continues for years.

Michael James sent me this message recounting the day his team had in winning the handicap division, and I think it does a great job capturing what the event is all about.

My team consisted of Andrea McPhail and Sophie Klicka, who are cousins, and are both granddaughters of Chris Holzschuh.

After two games of qualifying, I didn't think we were doing anything special... I had about 445 and each of the girls had about 310 or so.  Then I learned that Andrea averages 116 and Sophie was in the 130s.  They were really kicking it, but you'd never know it from their demeanor as they had other siblings/cousins on the pair and they were all goofing around like pre-and early teens do.

So once I realized how well the team was doing, I asked the girls if they were having fun bowling, and they said that they were.  Then I asked if they could have more fun, and they each said YES.  So I asked them if we could get up to 5% more fun and they agreed.

Then I threw a bad shot (and spared) and they both opened.  Sophie then said "I think we can even have 8% more fun".

Thus, the team name "Team 8% More Fun" was born, and though that team name will never appear officially, that made us a team and it all clicked.  About that time, Sophie's brother (I think) called her "Sophie 300 Game", so I started calling her that.  A little later, I decided that Andrea (the 116 avg, older, and decidedly more shy one) needed a nickname, and I pulled "Andrea the Hammer" out of thin air.

During one of the Baker games in qualifying, our team had a scratch 247 game.  Again... with a 116 and a mid-130s average bowler.  Our qualifying score had us in 2nd place after the cut for the next round of Baker games.

Nothing exciting happened too much that second round (other than us holding our own and bowling well enough to be the #1 seed in the Finals).

We bowled Shawn Klinke's team.  My first frame I left a 6-10 and cherryed it, and Andrea left a Greek Church and took 1 pin, giving us 15 in the 2nd and when our opponents both marked we had already used up our 17 pins of handicap.  The girls looked terrified to be bowling for the championship, so I went to Chris and one of the moms (I don't know which) but I said that the girls were pressuring themselves, so I said that I was going into Full Fun Mode.

Sophie got up, left a 5-6-10, and came back saying that she hated that she was by herself and everyone was watching.  I told her (loud enough for everyone in the center to hear) that this was a blast, and this is what bowlers live for.  You don't win unless everyone is watching... "This is Great!".  She rolled her eyes at me, then made the split, and every single person applauded long and loud.  She was way totally embarrassed.  And I was having the time of my life.

In mid-game, Shawn's team had five opens in a row and we stayed relatively clean, and when their bowler opened in the 9th, it clinched the game for us.  When I got up in the 10th, I threw my first ball and I came back and told the girls "That's it, we win", and they both looked confused and said "Really?"  Ah, kids... I was living and dying with each ball by each team, and they had to be told that they won.
