The Kurt Davids Memorial New Year's Eve Day Handicap Singles Tournament is moving to Village Lanes in Monona after three years at Schwoegler’s Entertainment Center, tournament directors Jim and Jessica Wipperfurth announced Friday.
There again will be a single squad at 10 a.m. with a 120-player maximum field, though the field exceeded 150 players times at 30-lane Badger Bowl when it was held there through 2015 before that center closed in 2016. Village is owned by the same group that owned Badger.
It's a great, fun event that honors my long-time good buddy who died far too early in 2010, making it one of the few handicap tournaments I have competed in. I won’t be able to this year due to work and the early start time — if there was a second squad I could make it.
The format again will be four games of qualifying with the top 24 advancing to bracket match play and the top eight getting first-round byes.
Handicap is 90 percent based on a 220 average, with a maximum of 60 pins per game.
The entry fee is $46 and first will be $800 based on 120 entries. The cashing ratio is 1-in-5. There is no expense fee in the entry fee.
To enter, reach the Wipperfurths by Facebook message, or call or text 608-772-5391 or 608-577-6594.
The Wipperfurths said the move of the tournament comes as they leave running the pro shop at Schwoegler’s, though they will continue to run the pro shop at Schwoegler’s Sugar River Lanes in Belleville. They plan to focus on that shop, their four children and running tournaments.
They wanted to thank the management at Schwoegler’s Entertainment Center for the opportunity to run the shop there.
