Long ago, what Brenden Sramek did on Sunday at May City Bowl in Cedar Rapids, Iowa was fairly common: Every year numerous bowlers across the country would win spots in the U.S. Open in local qualifying tournaments.
Now such events are rare, with the Greater Iowa Bowling Association Iowa Open being one of the few.
Sramek won the 2021 GIBA Iowa Open to earn $550 and a spot in the 2022 U.S. Open Jan. 30-Feb. 6 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.
