As I detailed in this story, it doesn’t get more brutal in bowling than flat pattern day at the U.S. Open, and this year was no exception, with just 26 of the 108 players averaging 200 or better on Wednesday. Thursday’s challenging, but not nearly as penal pattern produced what seemed like a scoring explosion, topped by the 1,913 8-game total of Anthony Simonsen that lifted him to second and the 1,883 that lifted Kyle Sherman from 84th to 23rd.
