The 2023 Junior Hall of Fame Tournament Sunday at Bowlero Lanes in the Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa awarded $11,700 in SMART scholarship funds, tournament founder and director Shannon Labinski announced.

The tournament, which also awarded $500 in Bowl4Life scholarships, has awarded $144,135 in SMART scholarship funding since it began in 2007.

The field was 24 scratch and 40 handicap teams. Prior to 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, the field was 84 teams, with 24 scratch and 60 handicap.

New PBA Tour champion A.J. Johnson was the celebrity.

The tournament is sponsored by 900 Global, I AM Bowling, the Milwaukee Area USBC and Hall of Fame, Ten on the Deck Productions, Bowl4Life, and the PBA — the tournament is now a PBA Junior Affiliate tournament and features PBA Junior Star awards.

Phil Brylow & $2 Phil - Ten On The Deck Productions again webcast the scratch division of the tournament.

The youth female and male bowlers rolling the most pins over their average during qualifying in the handicap division win the $50 PBA Junior Star awards. Scratch prizes are awarded to the highest 4-game series male and female in the scratch division.

The Chuck Eberhardt Team Award was given to the top qualifying team in each division.

In scratch, there was four games of traditional bowling and four games of team Baker format, with the top eight teams advancing to Round 2.

In Round 2, those eight teams bowled four more team Baker games, with pins carrying over, and the top four teams then advanced to a stepladder finals. The stepladder format was 2-game team Baker format matches.

In handicap, there was three games of traditional bowling and four games of team Baker format, with the top 20 teams advancing to Round 2.

In Round 2, those 20 teams bowled four more team Baker games, with pins carrying over, and the top four teams then advanced to a stepladder finals. The stepladder was 1-game team Baker format matches.

The team Baker format has the adult bowling frames 1, 4, 7 and 10 and the youths bowling 2-5-8 and 3-6-9.

In the handicap division, handicap is 85% of 220 for individuals and for Baker games is 60 percent of the total youth handicap per game.

Labinski said the 2023 Celebrity Charity Event the night before the JHOFT also was a success, raising money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Foundation Fighting Blindness and Down Syndrome Awareness Minnesota.

Labinski thanked the Hall of Fame Members and adult celebrities for donating their time to make this event possible, led by Betsy Bear-Hoff; the businesses that donated to the record-setting online auction, led by Rochelle Roventini; and Grebe's Bakery for taking care of the adult bowlers and staff.

The 18th annual Junior Hall of Fame Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024 at Bowlero Wauwatosa.
