Brad Edelman delivers an incredible number of entertaining stories in “Megabucks! This Was the High Roller.”
But no matter how many there were, I would always want more. That’s how good they were. And the pictures are worth the price all by themselves.
And whether you never bowled the High Rollers and offshoots, or just a couple like I did before I joined the PBA, or bowled dozens of them, I would wager you will feel the same way.
Some of the best stories are the tales of sponsors and bowlers and the deals that went right and wrong. And the IRS tales are classic.
The history of the famed Showboat obviously has a prominent place. The infamous rain delay might be the best of the many stories.
Of course, there are bowling stories … and bowling stories … and bowling stories.
Many legendary matches are recounted from the highs of Paul Renteria winning the High Roller in both 1992 and 1997, a mind-boggling feat, to some of the worst and most unbelievable losses.
PBA and USBC Hall of Famer Chris Barnes memorably was eliminated short of the cash one year, but won two sweepers at $25,000 each.
Larry Hoffman fell and suffered a concussion, but wouldn’t seek medical treatment until he bowled his sweeper, which, of course, he won.
Perhaps the most incredible story is one I cannot believe I never heard since the bowler involved is a friend, Louie Wemett. I won’t give it away, other than to say there are some bowlers who might have burned down the Showboat if it happened to them.
There are stories of the TV shows and the various spin-off events.
There’s even an appearance of a long-ago column by some journalist who was writing for the Ten Pin Journal of Milwaukee back then.
The one thing I would like to have read more about is the demise of the High Roller — what happened and why, and if Edelman thinks anything could have prevented or delayed that demise.
