SunOpta Sweeper Bowl for the Food Shelf offers $1,200 top prize, chance to help those in need

Writing up a handicap tournament in Minnesota goes beyond my usual policy, but this tournament benefits a worthy charity, is at a center I’ve enjoyed competing at in the past, and the request came from a subscriber, so I am "violating" my policy.

The sixth annual SunOpta Sweeper Bowl for the Food Shelf on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. is at Garden Center Lanes in Alexandria, Minnesota.

The entry fee is $65 and first is $1,200. Brackets and side pots will be available.

The format is six games of qualifying, with the top 16 advancing to single elimination match play until four remain who will bowl a stepladder finals.

Handicap is 80 percent based on 220, with bowlers using their 2016-17 high average of 21 games or more.

A portion of the entry fee will be donated to the food shelf, and the Alexandria Area USBC Bowling Association will match food shelf donations up to $1,000.

The event has raised more than $13,000 for the Food Shelf in its first five years.
